Mimosa Hostilis<\/strong> (also known as Jurema<\/em> or Tepezcohuite<\/em>) is a tree that originally grows in north-eastern Brazil, Mexico and other parts of South and Central America. Mimosa Hostilis is particularly known for its rich, tannin- and alkaloid-rich root bark. Historically, both roots and trunk have been used for everything from dyeing to ritual contexts, which has given the tree a sacred status in some cultures.<\/p>\n

In Mexico and north-eastern Brazil, the bark has long had a place in craft and folk tradition, including under the name tepezcohuite, and in recent years it has also attracted attention from the cosmetics industry.<\/p>\n

Beyond craft and ritual, Mimosa Hostilis has also been used in everyday life: as fodder, building material, shade for animals, and for dyeing textiles and leather. The strong, tannin-rich bark gives a thick, nutty, dark colour that has been popular for preserving and marking kinship and ritual textiles.<\/p>\n
